USCG Station Destin 

The USCG Station Destin is located on the Emerald Coast of Florida and is one of the country’s oldest and most well-known stations. Its role is not just limited to the rescue of boats and people, however. In addition, the station is also responsible for training sailors, pilots, and other maritime professionals.

CG-41408 Was Struck by Waves on March 3, 1981

One of the most spectacular moments in the history of the United States Navy came in March 1981 when CG-41408 struck a wave and was swept away, losing power and eventually capsizing. Fortunately for all involved, there was an air pocket where the two surviving crewmen could safely swim to shore. Unfortunately for the Machinery Technician 3rd Class, he died from hypothermia. According to the Navy’s website, the CG-41408 was an A75L300, an aircraft designed to carry a payload of up to 25,000 pounds. The rudder control was not working properly and the aircraft lost all power. It was registered in Guatemala as TG-DUL-F and had previously been registered in the US as N65684. Later reregistered as N65684, the A75L300 was sold to the French Navy in 1945.

Fortunately, the Coast Guard Station Destin does not offer on-base lodging facilities, but there are plenty of hotels in the nearby towns of Fort Walton Beach and Panama City to choose from.

Rudder The Dog

The Coast Guard Station Destin in Choctawhatchee Bay, Florida, is home to a black Labrador retriever named Rudder. Since 2010, the dog has been part of the station’s family, participating in training and serving as a source of morale for members and visitors.

Rudder’s duties include patrolling the coast and Intracoastal Waterway, conducting search and rescue operations, and performing a wide variety of law enforcement activities. His area of responsibility includes 30 miles of the Gulf of Mexico and Choctawhatchee Bay. Currently, there are 36 active duty and 12 reserve members in the station. There is also an auxiliary flotilla, Flotilla 14, with over 50 members. Auxiliary members are on hand to answer questions about boating and safety. They will also be displaying educational materials about boating and life jackets.

Rescue of Four People from a Capsized Vessel

USCG Station Destin crew members responded to a call that a 22-foot vessel had capsized. The call came in at 12:55 p.m. and the response boat was launched within minutes. Rescuers were able to recover four people. They were in their 20s and 30s and were wearing life jackets.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident. It is also searching for five more people.

The 21-foot open motorboat, towed by a barge, began taking on water at the mouth of Destin Pass, an inlet along the Intracoastal Waterway. The tidal currents were strong and the waves were three to six feet.

Upon arriving on the scene, the Coast Guard rescued four people. Two were unresponsive and were transferred to emergency medical services. In addition, two children, aged nine and 11, were rescued from the water.
